Our History

Our History

When GW Hodd opened the doors of his new Practice at 90 Moorgate in 1905, he could not have imagined that his Company would still be serving the City of London 100 years later. Originally called Burnett Hodd Opticians, he prided himself in offering a very high standard of personal service, combined with clinical and organisational skills.

Remaining open through both World Wars, and surprisingly being unaffected by the extensive bombing around St Paul’s Cathedral, the Moorgate Practice continued to flourish and expand. In the post-war years, GW was joined by his son Frederick ‘Freddie’ Hodd, who expanded the services offered by the Practice into the ‘new world’ of Contact Lenses, where he played a large part in the design and development of many types of rigid contact lenses.

During the early 1960’s, Freddie was joined in his Practice by George Barnes and Chris Dickins. This allowed him to pursue his other interests and become Secretary to the London Refraction Hospital, Contact Lens Examiner and open a new Optical Practice at Devonshire Street in the West End of London.

Our History

The creation of a new limited Company, Hodd Barnes & Dickins, in the early 1970’s, saw the addition of 2 new Directors Terry Mahon and Mohsin Pirbhai. This led to an expansion of the Company into 2 new premises at 137 Cheapside and 94 High Holborn.

Each Practice is run by a Company Director, who is supported by a staff of professionally trained Optometrists, Dispensing Opticians and Receptionists. In-house glazing is provided at the High Holborn Practice by a professionally trained technician.

Our History

The 1980’s saw the original Moorgate Practice being re-located to 57 London Wall and subsequently to 11 Mason’s Avenue, where it continues to operate today.

The retirement of George Barnes in 1995 and Chris Dickins in 2006, saw a re-structuring within the Company and an amalgamation of the Cheapside and
